Blue Bloods- Melissa de la Cruz
I’d been debating since these books came out on whether or not I wanted to read them. Seeing as how shelves have begun to explode with novels that are gothic and darkly mythical like Stephenie Meyer’s acclaimed Twilight series, I was sort of looking for something not along that genre. I caved not too long ago and bought the first two books in paperback and was instantly hooked.
de la Cruz’s take on the vampire myth is rivaling the classic (which would, of course, be the king of vampires, Count Dracula himself) on being my favourite representation. She takes us into the luxurious world of modern day Manhattan, where the students are young and all painfully attractive. de la Cruz’s vampires are blue-blooded and come from ancient families. They resulted from the fall of Lucifer and his angels from heaven, where they were doomed to roam the earth as dark creatures thirsting for human blood. In modern times, the Blue Bloods are expected to blend into their environment as normal people, doing the typical teenager things. Unfortunately, after a teenager from Duchesne school is found dead, drained completely of her blood, the Blue Blood world is overcome with a threat that they had all believed to have ceased to exist.
This book was absolutely amazing. It was definitely a guilty-pleasure read, the kind that you want to curl up in bed and read in one sitting. It has all the elements of a juicy tidbit of gossip, mixed in with the curiosity of something we’ve all been told don’t exist. Sure does make you question that…
